Allow us to reintroduce Leach Botanical Garden’s restoration zone, "The East 5: Community Habitat Enhancement Project." We are changing the name from the “Back” 5 to "The East 5." The project’s new name honors the East Portland community and reflects the zone's location within the Garden. Join us in midsummer to experience The East 5, when a graded, gravel path opens to visitors.
The East 5’s mission is to create healthier ecosystems and communities through land restoration, community science opportunities, and environmental education.
The East 5 acres were added to Leach Botanical Garden as part of a larger land acquisition. In 2019, the Community Habitat Enhancement Project began. This expansion project is first and foremost an outdoor classroom and land stewardship community space, designed to provide restorative and educational opportunities for all.
Environmental Education
The East 5 is currently building educational programming. In the meantime, the entire garden space welcomes TK-12 classrooms and youth organizations for self-guided tours of up to 30 participants. Title-I schools and non-profit community groups are eligible for free admission through our Garden for All Group Grant.
Volunteer Stewardship
Our volunteers remove introduced plant species in the East 5 restoration site.
