Reception Desk: Greet visitors to the Manor house and garden and inform them of the gardens history and mission. Answer and direct inquiries both in person and by phone to the appropriate staff or volunteer person. Good communication and message taking skills essential.
Gift shop: Volunteers working in our gift shop selling gifts and plants must be comfortable handling cash, credit card payments and using a cash register. They should enjoy talking to people and be able to direct them to different areas of the garden.
Tour guides: Tours take place on a Saturday morning at 10:00am. Volunteers guide members of the public through the garden telling garden history and talking about the different garden habitats. Be able to talk on the monthly garden theme.
Outdoor class teacher: Teach curriculum based activities to school children K – G6 during the school term as requested by schools.
Gardener: working in the garden to maintain the Leach Garden plant collections or in the nursery to plant seeds and propagate plants which are raised for seed collection and for sale at our plant sales. Volunteers can specialize or work in both areas.
Seed Exchange: Leach Botanical Garden is part of an international seed exchange. Seeds are collected, prepared and sent out as requested to universities and gardens worldwide. This work is very specialized and requires a knowledge of plant cycles, attention to detail and good manual dexterity.
Throughout the year special events are held to raise operational funds for the garden. Volunteers are needed on planning and organizational committees for each event and to work the event itself.
